Will Sterling Silver TARNISH?2023-01-03T13:00:18+00:00

If left in the open air for a prolonged period, it is natural that sterling silver will tarnish (darken in its shine).

Pure Color Creations ships each bracelet and pendant in a sealed plastic bag with a tarnish retardant strip.  Always store your sterling silver jewelry in the plastic bag provided, with the tarnish retardant strip.  This will minimize the risk of any tarnish or discoloration of the sterling silver jewelry over time.  Anti-tarnish jewelry boxes are also available online and in stores.

If your sterling silver bracelet or pendant does darken slightly over time, sterling silver jewelry can easily be polished with a professional grade silver polish cloth (available).

What is TARNISH?2023-01-03T13:03:51+00:00

Tarnish is a loss of brightness, a dullness of color, because of prolonged exposure to air or moisture. Most metals (copper, brass, aluminum, silver, etc.) tarnish as a thin layer forms on their outermost surface.  This is due to a chemical reaction between the metal and the air/moisture.

Tarnish is a surface-only phenomenon that is self-limiting.  The layer of tarnish seals and protects the underlying layers from reacting.

This is very different from rust on steel, which is an oxide that penetrates and corrodes the core steel.  Sterling silver will NOT rust.

If my stone is DAMAGED, can it be repaired or replaced?2023-01-02T15:22:20+00:00

If your stone is damaged, it CANNOT BE REPAIRED.

However, the damaged stone MAY  BE REPLACEABLE, depending on the design of the solid sterling silver mounting in which it is set. The new stone must be of the same size and shape as the damaged stone being replaced. Please contact us to learn more.

Our leather bracelets and our cork bracelets include REMOVABLE solid sterling silver mountings that can be interchanged.  Plus, additional removable solid sterling silver mountings are available.

How can I tell if my jewelry is made of real 925 SOLID STERLING SILVER?2023-01-02T15:20:51+00:00

Sterling silver catches the light like no other.  We love the look of sterling silver. Real 925 sterling silver also has a high value in the market.  Items made from real 925 sterling silver come with a higher price tag than those that merely look like silver.

Knowing whether or not something is actually made of silver is important.  People who have an allergy, or sensitivity to other metals, have to make sure that their jewelry is real 925 solid sterling silver if they want to wear it without a negative reaction:

Authentication Hallmarks: Look for the marking that indicate the purity of the silver. International sellers of silver will stamp solid sterling silver as 925. This indicates the level of purity of the silver at 92.5% or higher.  This marking is sometimes (but not always) visible on the jewelry.

The Magnet Test: Most precious metals, like gold, silver and copper, are non-magnetic.  Silver is not noticeably magnetic, and exhibits only weak magnetic effects – unlike iron, nickel, & cobalt.  If your magnet sticks strongly to the piece, it has a ferromagnetic core and is not silver.  Fake silver or silver-plated items are generally made of other metals.

The Odor Test: Sterling silver is odorless.  If you can smell sulfur or a distinct metallic fragrance, then the jewelry is not sterling silver. The item could be silver-plated, but a scent indicates that it is not made entirely of sterling silver.

The Polish Test: Silver oxidizes and tarnishes, so it needs to be polished on a regular basis.  Rub the tarnished piece of jewelry with a professional polishing cloth (available). If no black residue appears on your cloth, it’s not silver.

The Scratch Test: Some items may be silver-plated, which means that they are covered with a thin layer of real silver. Can you scratch it with your fingernail and see another material below it? If so, then the item is plated with silver, but is not sterling silver. Over time, this thin layer of silver will wear away on your jewelry piece – exposing the ferromagnetic or alloy core.

The Ice Test: Take a cube of ice and put it on top of the silver piece of jewelry. Silver has the highest thermal conductivity of any common metal or alloy.  Even at room temperature, authentic silver products will melt the ice at an exceedingly rapid rate.

What is STERLING SILVER?2023-01-02T15:19:51+00:00

Sterling Silver is silver of 92 1/2% purity.  The term “925” is used when referring to the best available Sterling Silver.  All Pure Color Creations sterling silver bracelets and pendants are solid 925 Sterling Silver … the highest quality!

Some jewelers sell silver-plated, or silver-tone finished metal jewelry, which is substantially inferior to solid 925 sterling silver pieces.

What are the “CARE AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS” for these keepsake pieces of jewelry?2023-01-02T15:18:39+00:00

Always store your sterling silver jewelry in the plastic bag, with the tarnish retardant strip, provided.  This includes the sterling silver stone mounting found on leather and cork bracelets.  This will minimize the risk of any tarnish or discoloration of the sterling silver jewelry over time.  Sterling silver jewelry can be polished with a professional grade silver polish cloth (available).

Pendants and bracelets with prongs are especially fragile. Any excessive force on these prongs can result in a damaged or broken setting.  These prongs are susceptible to be caught in loose knit fabrics.

The glass and natural stone surface can be cleaned with a dry soft cloth.  Never submerse the stone in water, or any liquid. Doing so will risk permanent damage.  Excessive moisture may cause the hand-painted back surface of the glass to separate from the glass stone, and from the sterling silver mounting.  It may also weaken the jeweler’s adhesive securing the stone to the jewelry mounting.

Dropping the stones (glass or natural) on any hard surface, or hitting them against a hard surface, could cause them to break and shatter.  Avoid rubbing the stone surface with any abrasive materials.

How do I select a piece of jewelry?2023-01-02T15:14:35+00:00

Selecting a specific stone and jewelry mounting is a deeply personal choice.  The colors, the patterns, the overall look, the feel, etc.   Each person tends to see something different than others see, when looking at the abstract design of a stone.  The “orientation” of the stone in the setting also conveys a very different image and feel, when rotated different ways.

All these considerations are very special to the person making the selection.  This absolutely creates a very personal “feeling”.

It is not unusual for someone to spend a long time selecting that one stone and that one mounting that, together, is perfect for them, or a perfect gift for someone special in their life.  Often, you don’t find the stone.  The stone finds you.

Each person usually chooses a small set of stones.  Then, they spend significant time understanding which stone and which mounting just “feels right” together.  It really is about feeling.  That’s good!!!

What does orientation of the stone in the mounting mean and why is it so important?2023-01-03T13:06:14+00:00

“Orientation” means the direction that the stone is set in the mounting of the bracelet or pendant.

The direction of the stone designs in the jewelry or accessory setting influences the overall “look” and feel of the piece.
